Swanson's UNWritten Rules of ManagementJust getting bored to write things for a whole day. I'd rather copy some thoughtful stuff here just for fun, eh, not really, in fact I just want to write a new entry for my being-forgotten blog. Xinyan gave me a book Swanson's Unwritten Rules of Management sometime ago and I just read it through. The good of this handbook is not only it has well-thought content, but also it's tiny size - takes only half an hour to read it through. Alright, the first part out of three is here .... Hold on, you ask me why I tear it apart into 3 parts? I'll tell you. Seriously, people don't like to read a long list of rules and even if they do, they will forget most of them quickly because of the overwhelming information. So I put the whole thing into 3 parts and hope readers could digest them bit by bit. Hmm.. and that way I will get 3 new entries for my blog rather than one *wink wink grin*. Alright, here you go finally.
Whew! Got the first part done. I do hope all guys came to my blog will read these rules. Even though the book's title says Management, it's not really only for management. I learnt quite a lot from this book and felt myself right as a counter-example of many rules in it. Strongly suggest all readers of my blog read it carefully and follow up the other 2 parts when they come. At last, I would appreciate Xinyan for giving me this invaluable book. Ran out of free minutesI am experiencing another outage of free minutes again. This time I used up all my free minutes in half of the month. Fortunate enough, I realized the outage before being charged for extra minutes. Thank God, no huge phone bill again! Now I am using Skype for my regular communication and it's sweet enough to offer free calls to destinations in US and Canada till the end of this year. The only requirement of calling landlines or mobiles from Skype is a subscription of Skype Out. For any inbound calls, I am using Skype as well. My friends, if you want to call me please call 405-445-5318 from any kind of phones. The Skype In number is just like any other local number, except the call will be forwarded to my computer. So don't worry about any extra fee you will be charged. BTW, I am not abandoning my cell phone. From next billing cycle, it will be upgraded to a less cheaper plan and keeps ring ring for me. A team led by Professor Alan Epstein in MIT is developing a gas engine on a chip. It's by no mean to claim a win over fuel-cell based and any other approach of solving power supplying problems for today's ubiquitously available electronic gadgets, but it looks like a really interesting approach. One day I may show off to my friends how many HORSE POWER my new shining laptop has.

Have you ever known there's a society dedicated to the simpliest game we all love to play. This is a winning guide (not exactly, but kinda) featured on the society's website. One last thing to beg you my precious readers, please keep this secret from Kelly, 'cause we always use RPS to settle controversial issues ... *cough* ....
Coolness factor: 6 out of 5 again
Cool, funny, and creative. No much to say about it.

Hey, I damn want one of the monsters shown in the video!

Racism never be a cool thing. Even though the article didn't say anything directly related to racism, but I smelt something suspicious there. Anyway, the interpretation totally depends on one's own personal opinion and sensitivity level (I have a relatively highly sensitive mind as per traits of Taurus). Leaving out the serious thing, I am just wondering what 'Yellowest' names are.

To be honest, I haven't read it yet. just for reference purpose only.
Btw, Discovery Channel's new series Discovery Atlas is great. The episode of China Revealed has been aired today, but you could expect the recurring replay at some random and unknown time. Do your work to find it if you are interested in.
Hey wait, do I really have any serious reader? I haven't noticed any yet. So the 'you' referred in my writings is only a grammar need
I kept this as a draft for a long time, and forget where I found it. My answer to this is YNNY. What's yours? I will be thankful to say your opinion here. Next big thing: SensorsI can't stand to keep quiet with this news. As I am working in this field right now, the applications like what Microsoft is going to do really impress me. Kudos to Microsoft! OSU website hackedI just discovered that www.okstate.edu, the website of our university, has been hacked!!! What a lame webmaster we have!!! Go there and have a look by yourself. I attached a screenshot here as well. Update: The Italian quote on top of the page said: "Una donna talmente normale che rischia di sembrare originale uno strano animale, debole e forte in armonia con tutto anche con la morte" Translate to english using babelfish, it's: "A so normal woman who risks to seem originates them one strange animal, weak person and fort in harmony with all also with the dead women." 几天不见有点想念掰着指头算算kelly还有大约一天零六个小时就从houston回来了。高兴啊。这平常天天在一起不觉得,刚离开几天还发现我还真挺想念她的。 Comic: Born Programmerdid you experience the punishment that your teacher asked you to repeat some words many times when you did something wrong. don't worry about that, there has a ultimate solution for that
funny computer predictionsToday I digged some funny predictions which were made by the well known big guys in the history of computer industry. The guys may be serious at that time, but you will not keep serious while you read it with your modern brain. Let's take a look at them.
'I think there is a world market for maybe five computers' - Thomas Watson, Chairman of IBM, 1943
Well, Thomas, it's not your fault to make such prediction when you hadn't sold any of the so called 'computer'.
'While a calculator on the ENIAC is equipped with 10000 vacuum tubes and weighs 30 tons, computers of the future may have only 1000 vacuum tubes and weigh only 1.5 tons.' - Popular mechanics, 1949
come on, don't just look at today's technology. you'll never know when will the next amazing technology emerge.
'I have travelled the length and breadth of this country and talked with the best people, and I can assure you that data processing is a fad that won't last out the year' - Editor in charge of business books for Prentice Hall, 1957
yes, the internet is also a fad, but it's the fad that can make a lot of money and boost the productivity.
'But what... is it good for?' - Engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems division of IBM, commenting on the microchip, 1968
no comment, em, let me see what it is not good for?
'There is no reason why anyone would want a computer in the home' - Ken Olson, Present, Chairman and founder of Digital Equipment Corporation, 1977
that's right, if a computer still weighs 1 ton and only has a console or ugly X window.
'640K should be enough for anybody' - Bill Gates, 1981
em, if I didn't check out the requirement of Windows Vista, I would say 1G memory is enough for me.
10 Tips For Successful Public SpeakingEverybody , more or less, may have chance to speak in public. So I would like to recommend every ppl who visits my blog read this article. It may help you in the future. check it out talk.google.com is up and running!I'm not sure if I am the one of the very early people to witness the first run of talk.google.com. When I was wandering on the Slashdot and reading the post which discusses the possibility of the revealing of google's IM service, I tried the talk.google.com just for curiousness. Everyone knows that google always like to launch their new service right on the beginning of one day, say 12:00am. And right now the time is 12:20am. I am running Google Talk just after its launch 20 minutes.
There are an evidence I can make sure I am the early bird for Google Talk. Since there should be a blog entry in google's official blog to indicate the launch of Google Talk, but it's not there right now.
However, to be the first person to use a IM service is not a good experience, because you can't talk to anybody but just gaze on the empty buddy list. Hopefully I could get my first Google Talk buddy tomorrow.
update: I noticed the aforementioned blog entry for google talk's launch have already been posted on google's official blog this morning. (can you guys in china read the google blog? i am afraid you can't Well done!It seems everyone has started blogging. I thought it's time to write something down. First of all, I have to choose a nice theme for my space. Unfortunately, I can't find any perfect theme for me. Some of them have good color scheme, but the background pictures are silly. Others may have awesome background, but the round curve annoys me a lot. Does Microsoft treat everyone like novice, and always provide idiot-proof softwares to everybody. Hope I can get direct control to the underneath DHTML code of my space. Actually, I can't expect everyone is anesthetist like me^_^! So I will rate 4 out of 5 for MSN Spaces. Ok, after I tackled the theme problem, I have to think about what I want to write down. I will mainly focus on the trivial things in my life, the feelings in God, and the topics in technical and scientific domain. In the end, I really hope you guys who read my first post could leave your words. Have a good one. |
